This chair was designed and made as part of the Shropshire Ash Project as featured in the Countryside and Shropshire magazines. It is designed to be made in locally grown hardwoods giving the chair an incredibly small environmental footprint. The oak version of the chair seen in these picture makes the design completely durable in an outdoor setting. The chair is a modula and can be placed side by side to create a steam bent settee of any length. An upholstered option is also in development as well as other timbers, notably english elm.

This fascinating project was to create a calm and relaxing garden space adjoining a new palliative care suite at Bishops Castle Community Hospital. End of life care has been highlighted as an area needing great improvement in a modern NHS. The challenge is to give terminally ill patients and their families the privacy and care they need in a setting that is as relaxed as possible.

One of the special features of the suite is an especially wide door to allow the patients bed to be wheeled into the garden area. Many local people who are patients here will have worked their lives in the countryside and will be able to spend some of their last days in the fresh air, away from the hospital environment. The spiral bench I designed faces directly south to catch the sunshine and is able to easily accommodate the bed in its centre with loads of seating around. To help create a relaxing space the high back screens the hospital building from view. Once the garden area is planted all that will be visible will be trees, flowers and shrubs.

The ancient and natural form of a spiral was chosen for the bench. I feel that this shape is an encompassing and holding form, giving those who sit within it a feeling of security and calm. Cedar was selected for its durability and beauty as well as its aromatic qualities. It was cut and kiln dried just outside Bishops Castle by Antony Jones of Shropshire Hardwoods. (info@shropshirehardwoods.com)

Most of the timber I use is locally grown and processed and most of the furniture I make is delivered to customers in the area. This makes my business about as environmentally sensitive as it is possible to be. The garden area was officially opened by Sandra Bradbury the Sister in Charge of the hospital and representatives of the Kings Fund.

This method of construction can be used to create many different curved forms of seating. Alternative timbers could include oak, sweet chestnut or larch, all of which are locally available and noted for their durability

A bed can be boring. This bed isn’t.

A bed can even be uncomfortable. This bed certainly isn’t.

The effect of floating is achieved by careful design with the legs tucked just out of sight. This gives one of the largest pieces of household furniture a lightness of touch.

With an all timber construction including professionally pre-sprung beech slats this special bed is available in any size and a choice of timber. This example has a sycamore frame and contrasting burr oak panels.

As with all my furniture it will be designed for you and your home.

The alcoves on either side of this large inglenook needed to be used practically and also allow space for a large wide-screen television. This was achieved by careful measurement and a good design. A turntable allows the television to be rotated which gives easy access to the shelves. All the associated electronic gizmos are out of sight behind the yew and oak cupboard doors.

Maybe you could benefit from something similar?

At over 11 feet this is a high set of shelves. You can reach the upper shelves with the help of a specially made removable ladder or a permanently fixed, sliding library ladder. An ash tree cut on the estate was used for this project which had lovely olive markings and looks a little like marble.

The room is old and non symmetrical with the walls tapering outwards and has a door tight in the corner. These constraints on design were resolved by cantilevering the outer shelves from a pair of classically inspired fluted columns. They are supported by strong fixings to a backing board painted in the same colour as the wall.

Details include carved capitals using a floral pattern inspired by the customer.

The single central leg means that nobody has a leg in their way. It also makes it easy to squeeze in an extra guest or two. This example also extends with the extra panel stored neatly inside the table when not in use. The broad surface of a table is also an opportunity for the ancient art of veneering. Veneering uses stunningly beautiful timbers that are simply unavailable in large pieces, like burrs, and others like pippy yew, that are just too rare. These special timbers can be combined to create striking or more traditional designs. This example uses a bold pattern in maple and burr oak.

Very little space can be used very creatively. This small bedroom also had an awkward sloping ceiling and a large bed. It was still possible to make a generous walk-in wardrobe using double hinged doors and thoughtful design.
Two full length mirrors are fitted inside the doors which combined with pull-out rails creates a very beautiful dressing area.

The customer chose to have the wardrobe made in oak and birch with art deco details and cupboards above. How would you like yours?
